Save the dates! Back to Middle-earth Month (B2MEM) returns for the 18th running of the annual event. This year’s main event is titled Spies in the Shadows, and all events will culminate with a mini virtual convention hosted by the Spring into Arda team.
(All events, with the exception of the classic prompt board, will use Discord as the main place of contact and communication. Discord is required for the team event and convention participation; it is highly recommended for the solo event.)
Spies in the Shadows: A Middle-earth Mystery
This team-based event will consist of weekly missions to be completed by a small group known as a spy guild. The members of the spy guild (3 or 4 member groups) will collectively and individually complete missions to score points and compete to become the premier spy guild of Arda, to be announced at the Middle-earth Masquerade's Spy Guild Ceremony!
Spies in the Shadows: The Rogue Spy
This version of the above allows someone to solo the event without a team, and complete missions on their own. Top scoring rogue spies will be honored at the Spy Guild Ceremony!
It is possible to participate in both A Middle-earth Mystery and The Rogue Spy, but those who participate in both must not use the same work to complete a mission for their guild and for their solo mission.
Classic Back to Middle-earth Month Prompt Board
For those who are looking for a chill challenge for the month, a prompt board of 100 prompts will be available to be used however participants choose. The prompt board will be made available in its entirety on March 1, 2023. Additionally, B2MEM is an open event where ANYTHING you create during March counts! Feel free to add works you start, add to, or finish in March to the gallery!
MellonCon
A mini virtual convention hosted by the Spring into Arda team. This event will include pub quizzes, live readings, and other fun panels and events, including the Middle-earth Masquerade, a special event to honor the spy guilds that participated in B2MEM this year.
Timeline of Events
Sign-ups begin January 5, 2023 for Spies in the Shadows.
Sign-ups close for the team-based Spies in the Shadows: A Middle-earth Mystery on February 15, 2023. The team-based event will run March 1, 2023 through March 31, 2023.
Sign-ups close for the solo-based Spies in the Shadows: The Rogue Spy on March 31, 2023, but it is highly suggested to sign up by February 25, 2023 to avoid delays in communication and so that all missions will be available to you. The solo event will run March 1, 2023 through April 10, 2023.
No sign-up is necessary for the classic Back to Middle-earth Month Prompt Board, nor is sign-up required for posting works to the B2MEM gallery.
Registration for MellonCon is included for those who sign up for Spies in the Shadows. If you would like to attend MellonCon and the Middle-earth Masquerade and do not plan to participate in Spies in the Shadows and/or volunteer to help with MellonCon, a registration form will be available no later than February 25, 2023; you must sign up by March 31, 2023 or before non-participant reigstrations run out (whichever comes first) to be guaranteed admittance to this event, as we cannot guarantee late registration will be available.
MellonCon will be held virtually, April 14-16, 2023 (times and dates will depend on your timezone). This event will be run in Discord.

Posting & Viewing Works
Beginning March 1st, 2023, works can be posted to the AO3 collection. This collection never closes, so while the event will wrap by the end of April, you can always add works later as you are inspired and finish them.
