March 31st, 2021: Index of Names

Because this section is a dictionary-style list of entries, the prompts are instead based on the words themselves. If you have access to a copy of The Silmarillion, you can choose your own prompts from the index. If you do not have access, some options are listed.

Come up for a reason why a particular item or person had a particular name. For example, Aeglos, the spear of Gil-galad: The name translates to “Snow-point”.

Many characters have titles which might not be entirely explained, such as Fingon being referred to as ‘Valiant’ prior to his deeds in Middle-earth. Explain the origin of the title in your work.

Some characters have multiple names, like Finrod Felagund, and use different names for different reasons. Either use an alternate name for a character as your prompt, or make up a new moniker for that character and utilize that as your prompt.

The list of daily prompt sets is now complete. You can see the whole set by clicking on the b2mem2021 tag.
The AO3 collection remains open.

March 30th, 2021: The Sundering of the Elves

Because this is a chart, prompts will be based around what the diagram shows without quoted prompts.

The Sundering of the Elves explains how the Quendi came to scatter across Arda; Elwë, Olwë, and Elmo are three brothers demonstrating this. The theme of family being separated for a long period of time, perhaps even forever, is a topic which could be explored as your prompt.

Those who completed the journey with Olwe were called Lindar (for they were Singers) but by the Tatyai, or Noldor, they were called the Teleri, the Lastcomers for they tarried in searching for Elwe. Sometimes, a person has every intention of arriving on time, but ends up arriving late or at the end (except wizards; they are of course, never late). Allow your inspiration to come from someone or a group whose arrival is later than xpected.

The Avari are labeled as “the unwilling”, but what if they knew or figured out something the others did not? You can either focus your creation on the Avari (and perhaps their motives), or on the general idea of someone who refuses to do something despite it being something many others plan to do.

Bonus prompt from Donut: Teleri are fish friends and swan friends. Incorporate fish or swans into your creation.

March 29th, 2021: Genealogies

Because these are family trees, prompts will be based around genealogy without quoted prompts.
  • A lot of the members of the second generation of the House of Finwe had lots of children (especially by Elven standards), but the members of the third generation had very few children (typically one or none). Use this as inspiration for your creation.
  • Not all characters in The Silmarillion can be found in one of the family trees. Create a family tree for a character for whom family information is scarce. It could be speculative or a headcanon, or based on what little is known.
  • Copies of genealogies are found in many of Tolkien’s works; family is an important theme. Focus on family for the inspiration for your creation.

March 28th, 2021: Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age

Quote Prompt

“Thus the Wise were troubled, but none as yet perceived that Curunír had turned to dark thoughts and was already a traitor in heart: for he desired that he and no other should find the Great Ring, so that he might wield it himself and order all the world to his will. Too long he had studied the ways of Sauron in hope to defeat him, and now he envied him as a rival rather than hated his works.”
Summary Prompt

Peace follows the downfall of Sauron, but a threat ever lingers in those he turned to his cause.

Thematic Prompt

It is difficult to perceive a threat that comes from someone so close to us, so much so that we might become corrupted ourselves without proper care.  Reflect on one of the many cases when someone did, or could, become corrupted due to an outside force.

March 27th, 2021: Akallabêth

Quote Prompt

“Thus Ar-Pharazôn, King of the Land of the Star, grew to the mightiest tyrant that had yet been in the world since the reign of Morgoth, though in truth Sauron ruled from behind the throne.”

Summary Prompt

This chapter covers the downfall of Númenor, and a lot of Sauron behaving badly. But, really, it’s Sauron. What else do we expect?

Thematic Prompt

As we near the end of The Silmarillion, it should be noted that many editorial decisions made by Christopher regarding Pengolodh and Ælfwine, the storytellers of the work, may not have been the intent that J.R.R. Tolkien had. How important is the creator of the work, be it an author, artist, composer, or other creator, to be credited? Consider the creator (or translator, editor, etc.) of a work as your inspiration for today’s prompt.

March 26th, 2021: Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath

Quote Prompt

“Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope.”

Summary Prompt

Eärendil travelled in hopes of gaining the favour of the Valar once more, and in doing so brought hope to the people.

Thematic Prompt

Elwing is able to take the form of a bird with Ulmo’s help; in a previous chapter, Felagund is able to disguise himself and his companions in the likeness of orcs. Consider disguises and transformations for today’s creation inspiration.

March 25th, 2021: Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin

Quote Prompt

“Then Thorondor bore up Glorfindel's body out of the abyss, and they buried him in a mound of stones beside the pass; and a green turf came there, and yellow flowers bloomed upon it amid the barrenness of stone, until the world was changed.”

Summary Prompt

The Fall of Gondolin covers a lot of ground. We have the betrayal, the battle, and just after what seems to be an escape, one last tragedy to close out the chapter. (But don’t worry - just like a Marvel movie sign-off, Glorfindel will return in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’.)

Thematic Prompt

The greatest tragedy of war is the loss of a life loved by others. Many songs were sung and tales were told of the battle of Glorfindel and the balrog, and their fall. Consider the topic of grief, and how another person copes with this grief after the loss of someone dear for your prompt today.

March 24th, 2021: Of the Ruin of Doriath

Quote Prompt

“In time his [Thingol’s] desire was achieved, and the greatest of the works of Elves and Dwarves were brought together and made one; and its beauty was very great, for now the countless jewels of the Nauglamir did reflect and cast abroad tn marvellous hues the light of the Silmaril amidmost.”

Summary Prompt

Everybody dies. Seriously, this is obviously a great synopsis for The Silmarillion as a whole, but in this chapter, if you made it this far without a favorite character dying, chances are that changed by the end of this chapter. And by now, Morgoth knows what’s what about Gondolin, so we know the end is near. It’s just a really bad time chapter. Make sure you bring chocolate if this is the first time you’re reading it. In fact, just bring snacks, tissues, and a pet or plushie to snuggle while reading this even if you read it before, because it’s going to be a bad time.

Thematic Prompt

There are many cases of a treasure belonging to one person falling into the hands of someone else. Sometimes this happens by chance, sometimes by fate, and sometimes by crafty, clever, or deceitful means. For inspiration today, consider an object that comes into the possession of someone who is not the original and/or rightful owner for your creation.

March 23rd, 2021: Of Túrin Turambar

Quote Prompt

“Then Turambar asked for companions willing to aid him in his peril; and Dorlas stood forth, but no others.”

Summary Prompt

The tale of Turin Turambar is one of bad luck and grief, of love and loss, of moving from one place to another looking for home.

Thematic Prompt

When your days are dark, it helps to have a friend by your side. Use the topic of companionship as your prompt today.

March 22nd, 2021: Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad

Quote Prompt

“Yet neither by wolf, nor by Balrog, nor by Dragon, would Morgoth have achieved his end, but for the treachery of Men.”

Summary Prompt

The Nirnaeth Arnoediad was one of the bloodiest battles of the First Age, resulting in the death of King Fingon, among others. It was a significant win for Morgoth.

Thematic Prompt

Thingol gives leave to two people, Mablung and Beleg, to leave Doriath and participate in the battle, so long as they do not fight under the banners of the sons of Feanor. Imagine the conversation between these two and their King, or any conversation between someone and another person who holds power over them, in asking for permission to do something unpopular, as your prompt for today.

Of Beren and Lúthien

Quote prompt:

“Among the tales of sorrow and of ruin that come down to us from the darkness of those days there are yet some in which amid weeping there is joy and under the shadow of death light that endures.”

Summary prompt:

The tale of Beren and Luthien is one of love and hope enduring in loss and darkness, with a side of why Sauron and his wolf friends can and will ruin your day. And an additional side of how Celegorm and Curufin can try to ruin your day, and how to ruin their day back.

Thematic prompt:

Love is stronger even than death in the case of Beren and Luthien. For your creation, be inspired by love or something else that transcends the living world.

Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin

Quote Prompt:

“Thus he [Fingolfin] came alone to Angband’s gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came.”

Summary Prompt:

Men have been multiplying, and the Noldor are not doing well when it comes to retaining their fortresses. The sons of Feanor are particularly besieged by Morgoth’s forces. In this chapter there are numerous deaths, including Aegnor and Angrod, culminating with the battle between Fingolfin and Morgoth, which leads to Fingolfin’s end.

Thematic Prompt:

This chapter includes a long-time conversation piece: Who is the father of Ereinion Gil-galad? There are other characters where their origins have questions, or, where a ‘what if?’ consideration could lead to an interesting character study. Consider character origins as your prompt today when you create.

Of the Coming of Men into the West

Quote Prompt:

“In a valley among the foothills of the mountains, below the springs of Thalos, he saw lights in the evening, and far off he heard the sound of song.”

Summary Prompt:

Finrod happens upon the first settlement of Men in Ossiriand.

Theme Prompt:

The first settlements of Men were nothing like their cities in the later second age and third age. This was none more than a camp of folk previously unknown to the elves. Consider an early civilization for your prompt today--this could be for anyone in Middle-earth or in any of Tolkien’s other works (or perhaps in a different time and place, for those who like to dabble in crossovers).

Of Maeglin

Quote prompt:

“But Aredhel sprang before the dart, and it smote her in the shoulder; and Eöl was overborne by many and set in bonds, and led away, while others tended Aredhel. But Maeglin looking upon his father was silent.”

Summary prompt:

Aredhel escaped Eol’s captivity to return to her family, to provide her son with a better quality of life than they had in the dark forests of Nan Elmoth, but their escape would cost them her life and that of her husband.

Theme prompt:

A mother’s love involves sacrifice in many ways, sometimes that sacrifice can cost her everything. This is true with many of the mothers we meet in The Silmarillion, as well as other works by Tolkien. Consider the topics of the love of a parent and/or sacrifice of a parent (or parental figure -- you know we have to include the kidnap dads in here for those who were thinking about them) for your creation.

March 17th, 2021: Of the Noldor in Beleriand

Quote Prompt

“It was not long before whispered tales began to pass among the Sindar concerning the deeds of the Noldor ere they came to Beleriand.”
Summary Prompt

It is in this chapter that Thingol and Melian learn of the true reason the Noldor came to Beleriand. However, we also see that Galadriel withholds some important information about the events that passed when initially asked, specifically, the kinslaying.

Thematic Prompt

We see another instance of the Valar directly contacting one of the Eldar--specifically, Ulmo coming to speak to Turgon.  Sometimes, there are individuals who seem to be in the favor of a higher power (this could be spiritually related, a business arrangement, the ‘teacher’s pet’ idea, etc.).  Use this as your inspiration with what you create.

March 16th, 2021: Of Beleriand and its Realms

Quote Prompt

“Thus the realm of Finrod was the greatest by far, though he was the youngest of the great lords of the Noldor...”

Summary Prompt

Very much a geographical chapter, Of Beleriand and its Realms gives us frames of reference as to where the Noldor and Sindar have their strongholds, as well as who is positioned where and to what degree their power is in Middle-earth.

Thematic Prompt

Age can bring wisdom, but age can also bring grudges and the inability to analyze from different angles. Youth can bring innocence, and at times, a more worldly view. Consider a character who is either set in their ways, or exploring the world with wonder for today’s prompt.

March 15th, 2021: Of the Return of the Noldor

Quote Prompt

“And seeing no better hope he [Fingon] cried to Manwë, saying: 'O King to whom all birds are dear, speed now this feathered shaft, and recall some pity for the Noldor in their need!' His prayer was answered swiftly.”

Summary Prompt

The first wave of Noldor arrive in Middle-earth, and Fëanor meets his end. Following an attempt at negotiations (sort of) with Morgoth, Maedhros is captured and the remaining members of this first group hold their ground. Meanwhile, Fingolfin arrives with his host from the North. This chapter packs in an immense amount of history of the First Age.

Thematic Prompt

Several times in this chapter, there are mentions of ‘after a hundred years passed’. We often get a lot of information about great battles and important meetings and occurrences, but then there will be swaths of time without many details. Focus on one of these ‘in between’ times and consider how things went from point A to point B for your inspiration today.

March 14th, 2021: Of Men

Quote Prompt

“What may befall their [men’s] spirits after death the Elves know not.”

Summary Prompt

This chapter opens with the changing of time, in that years are now shorter and faster with the Sun than they were with the trees. We also meet the Race of Men, similar in appearance to Elves, but with very important differences. The differences between the spirits of Elves and Men were many. While Elves would not die of illness or old age, they could still be destroyed, and the fire of their spirit would consume them over time. Men on the other hand, were more physically frail, more easily injured and sickened, and they grew old and died.

Thematic Prompt

Despite their differences, both Elves and Men were subject to death. The Elves have assurances as to where they are able to end up; with Men, there is great uncertainty. Use the theme of morality, and certainty or uncertainty of death as the prompt today.

March 13th, 2021: Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor

Quote Prompt

“But Mandos said: 'And yet remain evil. To me shall Fëanor come soon.'”

Summary Prompt

The fate of the Two Trees is finalized here, with Arien and Tilion taking the last flower and fruit of the trees up into the sky to become the Sun and Moon. Morgoth is not exactly happy about this, and the Valar make some proactive decisions to keep him (and other threats) from easily getting to Valinor.

Thematic Prompt

Time passes for everyone, and everyone’s time will come. The Doom of Mandos decrees this for the Noldor who participated in the Kinslaying at Alqualondë. Consider someone or something coming to the end of something, and use this as your inspiration.

March 12th, 2021: Of the Sindar
Quote Prompt

“In Beleriand in those days the Elves walked, and the rivers flowed, and the stars shone, and the night-flowers gave forth their scents; and the beauty of Melian was as the noon, and the beauty of Lúthien was as the dawn in spring.”

Summary Prompt

We learn now of the peoples in Middle-earth, and of the Elves who did not make the journey. Information about the Dwarves and their whereabouts and dealings is present in this chapter as well. Just as progress was being made in Valinor by the Elves there, writing systems, weaponry, and governance, among other things, have been evolving in Middle-earth.

Thematic Prompt

Many times, there is a calm before the storm. In today’s creation, use this thought of a time of calm, peace, merriment, or prosperity as your inspiration.
